On recent seismic tomography for the western United States

چکیده

[1] In recent years, a number of relatively high resolution seismic tomography models for the uppermost mantle underneath the western United States have been published, and vigorous debate has ensued about their tectonic interpretation. I present a straightforward, yet quantitative, comparison between models in order to help establish a framework for geodynamic interpretation, and to help judge the role of tomographic theory vs. data selection. Mapped S and P wave anomalies are found to be remarkably consistent between models, which implies that seismologists are beginning to narrow down the structure underneath active continental margins to scales of 200 km. Large discrepancies between published anomaly amplitudes exist, however, and the models on the high end of the spectrum raise questions as to how they are to be interpreted in terms of temperature, composition, and melting.

Ambient Noise Tomography in the Western US using Data from the EarthScope/USArray Transportable Array

The teleseismic transmission of seismic surface waves from earthquakes results in a loss of the high frequencies needed to infer information about Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle. A recent innovation in seismic imaging based on using long time sequences of ambient seismic noise moves beyond some of the limitations imposed on earthquakebased methods to reveal high resolution information about...

Attenuation tomography of the western United States from ambient seismic noise

[1] We show that the spatial coherency of the ambient seismic field can be used for attenuation tomography in the western United States. We evaluate the real portion of the spatial coherency with an elastic geometric spreading term (a Bessel function) and a distance dependent decay (an attenuation coefficient). In order to invert the spatial coherency, a weight stack inversion technique is appl...

Making Research Matter; Comment on “Public Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal”

We offer a UK-based commentary on the recent “Perspective” published in IJHPM by Thakkar and Sullivan. We are sympathetic to the authors’ call for increased funding for health service and policy research (HSPR). However, we point out that increasing that investment – in any of the three countries they compare: Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom– will ipso facto not necessarily lea...

Structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the western United States revealed by ambient noise and earthquake tomography

[1] Ambient noise tomography and multiple plane wave earthquake tomography are new methods of surface wave analysis that yield much more highly refined information about the crust and uppermost mantle than traditional surface wave techniques. Applied together to data observed at more than 300 broadband seismic stations from the Transportable Array component of the EarthScope USArray, these meth...

Fossil slabs attached to unsubducted fragments of the Farallon plate.

As the Pacific-Farallon spreading center approached North America, the Farallon plate fragmented into a number of small plates. Some of the microplate fragments ceased subducting before the spreading center reached the trench. Most tectonic models have assumed that the subducting oceanic slab detached from these microplates close to the trench, but recent seismic tomography studies have reveale...
